Hilde Holger (1905-2001)
• IT is great to see the life and work of Hilde Holger in print again (All the right moves, Review, April 12).
Assisting her daughter in the research and archiving of her life’s work as a dancer and instructor was a great experience for me, starting in my early 20s after a chance meeting with both Darius and Primavera leaving a church event in the local area. This was quite a stroke of fate.
My father had actually lodged in an upstairs bedroom at Hilde’s residence in Camden Town back in the early 1980s. He still speaks fondly of her, bringing back unusual Brazilian instruments for her to use in her dances, being the country of his childhood, as well as being invited to see her performance Umbrellas in the Hampstead Theatre.
If it had not been for Darius recognising him after well over 20 years, I would never have come to be involved in the project which led to the creation of an English Wiki page to inform any interested individual of her life and career, which has now been translated into seven other languages.
We hope that the archive which is currently being collated can find a safe and suitable home somewhere in the local community, or in Vienna the city of her birth. Thank you for publishing this article.
