IKEA will open in Oxford Street on May 1.

The new store, in the former flagship Topshop, has undergone an extensive renovation of the grade II-listed building while retaining heritage features.

A “crowning achievement” of the renovation has been the refurbishment of the 4th floor’s original Victorian roof lantern and the lift lobbies, IKEA said.

There will be a showroom, market-hall and a Swedish deli in the store that is spread over the first three floors of the seven-storey building.

There will also be three other yet-to-be-announced retail outlets in the building, with the four upper floors used for offices.

There are 150 jobs being created that IKEA – the world’s largest furniture retailer – says have been advertised through the city council’s employment service.

IKEA chief executive Peter Jelkeby said: “Whether a local Londoner or a tourist passing through, IKEA Oxford Street aims to inspire home dreams for everyone.”

The store opening follows an announcement by London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan that Oxford Street, west of Oxford Circus, will be pedestrianised.
