Making roads slower doesn’t force drivers to go faster

‘It’s a strange logic that says making roads slower forces drivers to drive faster’
• I DON’T know if your correspondent J Jordan is a driver but she has surprising faith in those who are, (There are dangers with the 20mph limit, May 25).
It may well be that some speed at 40mph between cameras on a 20mph road, but I doubt those who do will suddenly stick to 30mph on a 30mph road. It’s more likely they’ll go back to speeding at 50-60mph, as they used to do round here.
It’s a strange logic that says making roads slower forces drivers to drive faster. At least the new restrictions seem to keep the speeding down a bit.
Notwithstanding her assertion, 30mph is fast – 50 per cent faster than 20mph with an exponential rise in fatalities from accidents. I know of at least two pedestrian deaths in Finchley Road alone when it was 30mph.
However, it’s worth noting how little it gains you. On a five-mile journey you’d save less than five minutes, assuming no traffic at all.
And research has shown that 20mph limits cause less pollution, not more. And I don’t believe anyone wants London to be traffic-free. Free of drivers who refuse to drive safely or pollute less is another matter.
