PART of Camden People’s Theatre’s Outside the Box series, North West by Anna Morrissey and Tristan Kajanus is a site-specific audio artwork, interweaving music, sound and the verbatim testimony of former staff and students at the North Westminster Community School, situated in the Paddington Basin for 25 years. The show will run both digitally and in person via headphones at the site of the former school from May 3-23. You can listen to Morrissey and Kajanus’s audio experience as you walk through the school’s original site. You will hear intimate stories, testimony and memories of some of the comprehensive’s 40,000 students before the school and the surrounding estates were demolished to make way for towers full of luxury flats. The project makes a stand against the erasure of our personal history in the face of gentrification. To book tickets visit: cptheatre.co.uk/production/outside-the-box-north-west/
• The latest in the BBC’s impressive lights up season, J’Ouvert, is set during the 2017 Notting Hill Carnival. The streets are alive with history and amidst the soca, sequins and endless feathers, Jade and Nadine are fighting for space in a world that should be theirs. A timely echo of Caribbean resistance across the centuries, J’Ouvert is a joyful and fearless story of two best friends, battling to preserve tradition in a society where women’s bodies are frequently under threat. Filmed on the stage of the Harold Pinter Theatre, J’Ouvert originated at Theatre 503 in a co-production with Bad Breed and Tobi Kyeremateng. Available on BBC iPlayer
• Reading Greek Tragedy Online (RGTO) was created during the first weeks of the Covid-19 lockdown by Paul O’Mahony, artistic director of the award-winning theatre company Out of Chaos. Paul contacted Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies, and suggested they collaborate on an online project to read Greek Tragedies with a group of international performers. Hosted by Joel Christensen of Brandeis University, each episode is an accessible and informative exploration of a classic text, read in English. The project has created a unique educational resource, available for free as a live stream (on the last Wednesday of the month) and a YouTube recording. Their latest reading is Apollonius of Rhodes’ Argonautica with Jackie Murray. You can access past and present readings by visiting: out-of-chaos.co.uk/greek-tragedy
