AN England side captained by Gunner Leah Williamson inflicted a revenge of sorts on Spain in a lively 1-0 UEFA Nations League victory in front of 46,550 fans at Wembley last night (Wednesday).

La Roja had denied Sarina Wiegman’s players by the same scoreline in Sydney in the historic World Cup final of 2023. But despite an imposing start, Spain could not work that same magic in London.

Arsenal’s Alessia Russo had scored for England in Friday’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Portugal, and the 26-year-old played her part at Wembley, too – her shot deflecting into the path of Jess Park, who prodded home.

It was a slender lead, but one that England might have extended had keeper Cata Coll not denied livewire Lauren James on numerous occasions. Not that Spain didn’t keep Hannah Hampton on her toes, the Chelsea shot-stopper making smart saves to deny Aitana Bonmati and Lucia Garcia.

The win sees England sit second in their four-team Nations League group, on the same points as Portugal, with Spain in third place and Belgium fourth.
