• (For Harry Levinson)
FROM my flat’s windows I can see
The ramparts of our Royal Free
Hospital, never shut to me.
Although I go but seldom there
I’m happy such a place is, where
Both poor and rich get the same care.
The poor when ill are only ill:
Once they’re discharged they need not still
Dread an inevitable bill.
The rich are treated – and can feel
Their taxes serve the common weal
To help a fractured nation heal.
Long live the vision! May we find
That we can still be wisely kind
Yoking together heart and mind!
