Lib Dems have faced less scrutiny than other parties

Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson

• AS usual the Tory media is intent on attacking Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party. What is new is that many seem nervous, even frightened of a Boris Johnson government which would align with Trump.

Jo Swinson and the Lib Dems have benefited from this, facing far less scrutiny. The Lib Dems have just made an electoral pact with the Greens. If Greens think they can escape Johnson by voting Swinson they should think again: many members are appalled.

Labour’s Tom Muirhead’s telling letter (So you want to vote for the Lib Dems? October 11), spells out that Jo Swinson, voted against an 18-month fracking ban, a review of the fracking industry’s environmental, health and social effects, and against requiring frackers to apply for environmental permits.

We should add Victoria Derbyshire’s pointed question to Swinson: “You took £14,000 in donations from the boss of a firm with fracking licences across the UK. Does that make you a hypocrite?”

Chuka Umunna has said that the Lib Dems are the party of business now – that seems to include the fracking business.

While Swinson is being presented as a safe pair of right-wing hands, are we to look forward to another Tory/Lib Dem coalition – or even a “Trump alliance” – where undermining action against climate change, selling off the NHS and a US corporate take-over will all be on the agenda?
