• INSTEAD of celebrities coming up with “stunts” (Chris Packham plans ‘forest’ for Euston in protest at HS2, September 19), I would like to see Camden Council allowing the public to present their own ideas on how to alleviate climate destruction.

I understand that a “citizens assembly” has already been elected to do that for us. But because the ideas of those not in the assembly will remain unheard, here are mine…

Trees are now considered probably the most important element in nature to combat carbon emissions, and as well as growing more of them and not chopping them down for super highways, I propose the woodchips created from the debris arising from tree surgery in the borough (private and council) is given drop-off points at key locations so that residents can use the woodchips free of charge to lay paths, make compost, mulch park land and gardens, replace concrete and for many other uses.

Woodchips are very versatile, pleasant to walk on, environmentally friendly, prevent water run-offs, retain moisture in the soil beneath them, and woodchip gardening is now a growing trend.

In addition to the ecological use of woodchips the carbon footprint of tree surgeons will be greatly reduced because presently the trucks have to travel out of the borough, some beyond the M25, to find a facility to drop their load and then have to come all the way back into London to the next job.

This creates pollution and emission from the diesel powered trucks and employment time is wasted. Please Camden let us use this much needed valuable resource while establishing an action that will help reverse the impending climate crisis.
