Let’s make it safer for pedestrians

Thursday, 11th March 2021

• TRANSPORT for London said there are 261 junctions in London with traffic lights for cars but no safe time for pedestrians to cross the road. This puts Londoners in danger.

In 2019 1,282 people were seriously injured while walking on or next to London’s roads, and 68 people were killed while walking.

Too many of our roads are hostile to people getting around on foot, especially children, older and disabled people and far too many people are being killed and seriously injured each year simply trying to cross the road.

I was proud to put a motion to the London Assembly last week which called on the mayor to make sure all junctions have signal protected pedestrian crossings by 2030, and I am pleased say was agreed – cross-party and unanimously.

By putting new safe crossings in place we will save the lives of Londoners.
