• CUTS in police have made nonsense of “safer neighbourhood policing” according to a CNJ report.

Responding to this criticism a police officer said he was going to have to “think outside of the box”, adding: “There are other ways to deal with issues when you don’t have the resources.”

The officer is to be praised for thinking outside the box, but when a crime is com­mitted, it really does require a little more than that.

To me the minimum is that the incident will be properly investigated – and I personally know of several cases where that has not happened.

Rather than having officers “look to other ways” (magic? Smoke and mirrors? Distracting acrobatics?) is it really too much to expect our government to resource the police properly?

I was always persuaded that the Conservatives were the party of law and order. The evidence clearly says that they are not.
