THOUSANDS of pounds were donated to St Mary’s Hospital by the South East Bayswater Residents’ Association (Sebra) at its annual summertime bash.
A cheque for £5,000 was passed to Lady Jane Fellowes for the Paddington hospital, which is aiming to raise £20,000 for a new ultrasound machine to expand its anaesthesia service.
The summer party theme was in honour of the NHS and its 70th anniversary.
“It’s a pleasure to be here and thank you for your support,” said Lady Fellowes, who cut a 70th anniversary NHS cake with Sebra chairman John Zamit.
Donald Trump, Jeremy Corbyn and Meghan Markle were spotted at the
event in Cleveland Square Gardens last Thursday… Well, the traditional cardboard cut-outs were.
Mr Zamit told the crowds: “Trump sent his apologies – he said he couldn’t make it… he did in fact send me a telegram. Actually, I think it was a tweet.”
Mr Zamit led a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday to the NHS followed by a barbecue, brass band and bottles of wine to celebrate. Labour MP Karen Buck and Conservative council deputy leader David Harvey helped out Mr Zamit with the raffle, granting lucky winners a black taxi cab tour of London and a meal for two on a canal boat restaurant.
Catherine Watters, Sebra secretary, told Westminster Extra: “It costs a lot of money to put this on but it is all in support of what Sebra do for the area. John [Zamit] is an unsung hero, really, he does a lot for the community.”
Sebra produce a magazine three times a year. The summer edition saw 1,500 copies printed and delivered to members, residents, MPs and councillors.
