Labour offers a green new deal for Westminster
Thursday, 4th November 2021

Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg
• RESPONDING effectively to the climate emergency requires action on the national, international and local stages.
On the national and international stages the Labour Party is committed to:
— investing £28billion every year until 2030 to tackle the climate crisis, protect the planet and create secure jobs in the UK;
— reversing the overseas aid cut and massively increasing vaccine supply for the world’s poorest countries;
— phasing out fossil fuels and ensuring a just transition for workers;
— ending deforestation and ensuring all climate mitigation and adaptation is nature positive; and
— requiring financial institutions and FTSE 100 companies to publish their carbon footprint and adopt credible transition action plans.
Locally a Labour Westminster City Council will introduce a climate citizens’ assembly, putting residents at the heart of climate policy-making.
Local climate assemblies have been introduced by councils across the UK to help build a stronger bridge between elected representatives and their communities, providing a space for new ideas to be developed.
We will also establish a climate emergency scrutiny panel of experts and residents to hold the council to account.
We will also prioritise installing renewable energy sources in homes by, for example, rolling out solar panels to as many homes as possible.
We will shortly be releasing our ambitious new ideas in A Green New Deal for Westminster.
It will detail some of the steps that Labour will take to tackle the climate emergency here, setting out our agenda to build a net-zero carbon future for our city.
