Just? It’s an illusion

• IT is extraordinary that we continue to sign up to the illusion that our society, while not equal, shares an aspiration that we should all be equal, one person one vote and in the sight of the law.
Harrington’s article (Harrington: There are things we’ll never know, October 13) is a timely reminder of how the law is essentially a service for those who can afford it and hang the rest of us.
The law routinely looks away from injustice towards those with the millions and billions of pounds, despite so-called efforts to even things up.
Cutting the legal aid budget to the bone, as has been done, immediately wipes out most well intentioned reforms. Trashing the trade unions closed off access to the law for many.
Blindfold Lady Justice with her scales and sword of retribution survives on the basis of books/films such as To Kill a Mockingbird telling exceptional stories of her triumph. Those are not the norm.
We’ve long known that money trumps truth, and that becomes more true with every day that passes. And there’s no sign the powers that be have any intention of changing that.
