Tim Barnes with Nickie Aiken
• IN the half-page ad, (Conservatives choose Barnes, Extra, March 29), one hoped to get his views on the longest wage stagnation / austerity since 1815, the most strikes by key workers since 1926, the low incomes of 14.5 million, the 2.56 million using food banks, the cuts in social housing, libraries, legal aid, leisure and youth centres, the conduct of public affairs for private gain during Covid-19, the government flouting of its own lockdown rules, the web of privilege, deference and class that shape our institutions, any wealth distribution beyond the rich, the results of Brexit, Truss’s free market delusions, the concocted “culture wars”-“moral panics”, the recklessness of the financial sector, London used as a tax haven and indifference to major tax avoidance, whether private companies should be regulated, the outlawing of so-called “disruptive protests”, anti-immigration fear-mongering, the charitable status of private schools, the need for transparency of lobbying and political donations… and to what extent “taking back control” has occurred in the last eight years.
Fat chance.
