WESTMINSTER Abbey will be the scene of Jack Dromey’s funeral on Monday – the Labour MP who died suddenly aged 73 on January 7.
You have to cast your minds back now but he had spiritedly helped organise the occupation of the Centre Point tower at the start of the 1970s. His anger boiled at the idea that people were sleeping rough in the cold while the skyscraper stood empty.
Yes, I did say the 1970s… but the same rage could well be found today, as makeshift beds still often line Tottenham Court Road.
Three years ago developers removed some of Centre Point’s £2million+ flats from the market as they were not getting enough takers.
At that time half of the homes were left empty. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
