It’s time for action for the long term on energy costs

‘The unprecedented increase in the energy cap will force many households into debt’
• RESIDENTS in Cities of London and Westminster are speaking to me about their concerns for energy bills this winter.
The unprecedented increase in the energy cap will force many households into debt and puts people’s health at risk as they sit in cold homes.
Listening to the Conservative leadership candidates debate the government’s response to this crisis, there is little discussion on meaningful long-term solutions for energy costs: insulating leaky homes and generating renewable energy.
Speaking to residents on St Michael’s Street whose windows need replacing, it’s clear that there is an immediate need for a national programme of insulation.
Working with local authorities and housing associations, the government could deliver this immediately and it would have a lasting impact not just this bleak winter but for years ahead.
Of course, the government should establish help for those struggling to pay their energy bills; they should also have a long-term plan for reducing costs.
Westminster City Council under Labour is leading the way, launching local net-zero projects and exploring the launch of local climate bonds.
Labour in government will seize the economic opportunity of moving to net-zero. It’s time for action for the long term.
