Young martial artists from across Camden, Islington and Westminster came together to ‘showcase their fighting skills’
MASTERFUL martial artists from Holborn Tigers proved a big hit on Friday when they “showcased their fighting skills” during a special in-house competition.
Youngsters from across Camden, Islington and Westminster, who usually train in Taekwondo at different venues on different days, all came together at Holborn House Community Centre in Emerald Street for the Tigers’ inaugural club night.
“For the first time ever we brought all the kids that I train during the week together for a Friday fight night,” explained Master Rienzi Trento. “Students often only get to train alongside the same faces, so we wanted to freshen things up and give them a new challenge.
“It was a fantastic skill-builder. Our members got the chance to showcase their abilities against new opponents while also meeting their fellow Tigers.”
Reflecting on the atmosphere on and around the training mats, the 6th-dan black belt added: “It was electric. We had our students aged between four and 12 years old competing against each other in a safe and friendly environment, while some of our older members officiated the matches.
“It reminded me of the days when I use to train at Jubilee Hall in Covent Garden. It was great.”
Among the supporters watching on was mayor of Camden Samata Khatoon. The St Pancras & Somers Town councillor said: “Taekwondo provides children and young people with essential skills, including discipline, confidence, and physical fitness. It promotes focus, self-control, and resilience while encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle.
“Camden values and actively supports sports and physical activities as vital for the well-being of our young people. We continue to invest in opportunities that promote health, teamwork, and personal growth in our community.
“Thank you, Rienzi Trento for your extraordinary work. You have created champions, your work is commendable. Also a huge thank-you to all the staff, volunteers, and parents for their dedication and support, including Holborn Community Centre, for making this event a success!”
