• GREAT to see young people celebrating their exam results – a tribute to the hard work they’ve put in.

But our poor politicians must be despondent. Every election time all major parties pitch for our votes with pledges to tackle the inequalities that divide our society.

And yet once again this year results have further widened the divide between state and private school grades, surely one of the most fundamental causes of inequality.

It’s almost as if the politicians don’t really mean it.
