‘In war is the ordinary folk who will suffer and go hungry’

• GOOD to see Bob Davenport (Hear the bugle calling, February 17) sounding the alarm about those in power seeking to distract us from their domestic failures by warmongering.

More than 20 million Soviet citizens were killed during the Second World War – including around seven million Ukrainians.

In Britain we lost almost half a million of our people. It is us ordinary people who pay with our lives for the vanity of those in power. It’s our blood they would shed and our lives they would sacrifice.

As for “very tough” sanctions being promised by Boris Johnson and Joe Biden, you can bet that Vladimir Putin and his fellow kleptocrats won’t be starving. It is the ordinary folk who will suffer and go hungry.
