In the future make Oxford Street more than a ‘tourist trail’

An impression of how the grassy knoll feature, or Marble Arch hill, might look
• WESTMINSTER City Council is investing an as-yet-undisclosed sum in adding modular seating and greenery to revitalise Oxford Street.
Perhaps they should add tumbleweed to the programme as more and more retail businesses fail in what was once described as a “retail destination”.
It is simplistic to think tourists and visitors will return to try out the seating or pay to ascend a temporary green mound to look along the equally decimated Edgware Road or the refugee encampments of Park Lane, (Marble Arch to get its own hill, February 19).
The parks have been a godsend during lockdown – invest in them and redirect people there with some inspiring installations.
Bring back the bronze ‘Orphan’ elements beloved by children; reconsider the investment in Oxford Street to be more than a temporary fix but one that sees employment opportunities return through lower rents and business rates and stop further tourist “tat” shops and candied sweet sellers opening.
Make Oxford Street more than a “tourist trail”.
