‘A record number of vehicles on Britain’s roads’
• THERE are evidently a record number of vehicles on Britain’s roads, while our television screens give further glimpses of colossal traffic jams.
Most saloon cars appear to have only one person in them. Meanwhile our public transport system, of which I am a great supporter, is constantly slowed down by people trying to park, to do U-turns or to drive off angrily because a bus has crossed their path.
Children no longer seem to walk to school and some are already suffering from obesity. Many a 10-year-old now looks like the Michelin Man!
Yet the mass media claim that Britain suffers from impoverishment. How can this be? A friend of mine says that he spends £30 a week just keeping his car on the road. I could live on that for a fortnight.
