• YOUR front-page headline about the impossible pressures on NHS staff, leads to a rather obvious suggestion, well, obvious to those of us who are pacifists, (Soldiers on front line in hospital, January 21).

If the military were abolished, and the billions wasted on their obscene death-dealing equipment repurposed to expand the health and social care services, then we might be better able to cope with crises such as the current pandemic in the first place.

Just an idea.
