• SEEING our children going back to school after the summer and then the new prime minister with her “vision” being welcomed into the job should, I suppose, have been an exciting occasion.

Yet I am filled with foreboding on both counts. And the vision I can’t shake from my mind is a scene from Charles Dickens.
