PROTESTERS spilled out onto the streets as hundreds filled a packed Newington Green to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

A peaceful demonstration was held in Newington Green on Saturday as the protests against the death of George Floyd, who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes, continued.

Valerie Bossman-Quarshie was one of several speakers who took the stage and spoke about her experiences of racism growing up in Islington.

The Highbury mother told the Tribune: “It was such a positive gathering. Black and white people together in one space, there was not any fakeness.

“We were all there for one reason. Within that moment I could feel it was massive. I got to show what I represent on Saturday, it was really empowering. It was surreal. It took me days to recover.

“There was tears in the audience and people were smiling. People got the message.”
