Have a little faith in the planet

Professor Bill McGuire
• INTERESTING that so many people like Professor Bill McGuire who claim to be for Green policies and “saving the planet” have apparently so little faith in the vast processes of planet Earth and its bioprocesses and climate, its ability, with powers far beyond any human endeavour, to seek balance always, (Adapt or die, John Gulliver, August 11). As any geophysicist would know.
Ironically our attitude shows an arrogance that we are able to control its processes, called “saving the planet”, something quite different from being good shepherds of it.
The green and pleasant land to which he refers is very largely a human creation. This may perhaps originate in university offices in front of computer models. A few talks with farmers might be more appropriate.
But, as William Blake observed, man must and will have a religion, or as GK Chesterton said, when men cease to believe in God, they do not believe in nothing. They believe in anything.
