SOLIDARITY goes to the striking staff at the Guardian and the Observer who fear for the latter paper’s future amid a possible sale to Tortoise Media.

They were on the picket line outside their offices in King’s Cross for two days this week, and were handed support by several MPs, comedian Stewart Lee, children’s writer Michael Rosen and artist Grayson Perry.

People grumble that it’s been a long time since the Obs powered through with a series of must-buy, agenda-setting exclusives, but losing it would be a grave loss in a world where so much media has huge vested interest in keeping the wealthy wealthy, and less commitment to the rest of us.

From the outside, it’s hard not to be envious of the financial support of The Scott Trust underpinning these two famous titles, and those protesting this week wondered aloud as to whether the paper really did need to be sold off.
