Harrington: Will the Rhino ride again?

Lap-dancing club may be a little at odds with the newly-polished nature of TCR

TOTTENHAM Court Road always seems to be evolving. In a good way?

People will have different views depending on whether you prefer haggling for a transistor radio – like the old days – or getting your lunch at Leon, Itsu, Pret and every other pretend-healthy fastish food chain.

Throw in some super expensive furniture shops and the odd Monopoly game show thing, and the famous street has had a pretty sharp transformation.

But what is the future for Spearmint Rhino, the lap-dancing club which some might come to argue is a little at odds with the newly-polished nature of TCR? It has been closed for a lengthy period for what has been described as refurbishment works.

An interesting tenet of Camden Council’s licensing policy is the view that nowhere is now considered suitable for such a premises and no new permissions will be allowed to open a strip club of this nature.

The existing operators, however, have “grandfather” rights which means that as long as they are there they can stay.

This means if Spearmint Rhino’s owners leave Tottenham Court Road they would struggle to get a licence to open elsewhere in Camden at least.

The old Sophisticats in Euston tapped out earlier this year, and is currently being converted into a new Wetherspoons pub.

But campaigners who do not want Bloomsbury to have sex entertainment venues at all should not be rushing to the celebratory champagne, even if they can probably source a bottle for cheaper than the price behind the bar at Spearmint Rhino (Harrington wouldn’t know… but it’s apparently a lot more expensive than a lager at the nearby The Court pub). Paperwork shows the company has asked to renew its licence for the Tottenham Court Road building.

The Rhino may ride again.
