TO Brighton for a bit of culture and this week I found myself watching the Captain Marvel film star herself, Brie Larson, mesmerising the Theatre Royal’s audience as the lead in the Greek tragedy, Elektra.

The Oscar winner, who for this role has traded her superhero blonde waves for a shaved head, will not often be changing in a dressing room as small as the one at the seaside town’s ornate playhouse.

More reviews will come when the production finishes its warm-up week there and heads to the Duke of York Theatre in Soho – where anticipation is rising for Larson’s West End debut.

My impression was that half the audience had simply come to see a Hollywood face up close and then were a little confused by Sophocles’s bloody tale. The other half were more knowing but getting used to a punky reboot, mixing grunge mic reverb with the familiar lamenting chorus. Whether you understand what’s going on or not, it’s a quite a spectacle.
