Harrington: The fall of the Roman empire?

Stamford Bridge, Chelsea football stock

YOU may have read over the years many, many columns about how money has ruined football.

It doesn’t matter how many of them are written, nobody cares about such inconveniences when they are winning.

Up at Manchester United, the fans wear yellow and green scarves – “proper fan” merchandise that harks back to that club’s original colours – when they are angry with the directors. It’s back to red kit, however, when the ownership has satisfied the supporters with expensive marquee new players.

Truth is you can barely even get a sheepish smile out of a Chelsea fan if you dare mention what the club’s modern era success is founded on. You’d think it had all happened organically. Roman Abramovich is an idol.

So, when MPs were this week asking for sanctions on wealthy Russians living in England amid the Ukraine crisis – perhaps better described simply as “war” – to include the Chelsea owner: were fans thinking, “Right on, mate, it’s about time somebody started asking some questions”.

Or “Yeah, but we won the Champions League, and if the world is obliterated by World War III then we can say we were its last and forever winners.”
