Betty Romary
ONE of the first people featured on this diary when it began almost three years ago was Betty Romary – who laid claim to being the oldest member of University College London’s alumni – having begun a history degree there in 1937.
Harrington is sad to report she passed away earlier this month aged 105. I spent many afternoons chatting to her about the state of the world, but once or twice we talked about her impressive longevity too.

She put it down to eating healthy food – she’d never tasted the processed delights of a McDonald’s – and playing tennis.
But she also cited having good friends as a factor. She knew in a city where social isolation is too prevalent – particurlary in old age – how lucky she was to have a steady stream of guests pop in for a cup of tea each week.
So, whoever they are, don’t forget to visit.
