REGULAR readers will be well aware of what Harrington thinks of the London Assembly – and the missed opportunity to have meaningful devolution, debate and decision-making.
The majority of Londoners have no clue whatsoever who is representing them in this Ultra Low Efficiency Zone.
To make matters worse, its recent move away from a centralish location opposite the Tower of London to the Docklands makes an expedition to hear the city’s dullest politicians insisting they are holding Sadiq Khan to account – while he does exactly what he wants – even more uninspiring.
Harrington had to make the trek yesterday (Thursday) for a meeting and there’s no getting there in under 90 minutes. The scenic double of a clipper boat and a cable car may be a novelty once, but it would be a costly route for anybody who might be interested in attending more regularly.
A jigsaw of bus routes or a long trip down the Jubilee line are other options.
For an authority and assembly which has never captured the public imagination beyond the personality contest of the mayoral duels, it was probably the worst move they could have made.
Over there, with soulless towers all around and the ever-curious dome on the other side of the river, the London Assembly feels like it has been downgraded, and sinking further into obscurity.
They all get a fairly decent wage, but name one example in which an assembly member really forced Mr Khan to do something different than he planned.
I’ll wait… on slow boat back to London.
