Harrington: Hijack in the pub

Historic Ship features in Idris Elba series

IT’S a shame for Idris Elba that his series Hijack on Apple TV has not really built up a buzz over the last few weeks.

Some miniseries enter the national conversation, others don’t – and there’s only so many streaming services people can afford to subscribe to.

For those who have persevered, his “real time” story about – you guessed it – a hijacked plane has some gripping loose ends in need of tying up.

In the penultimate episode, however, it was good to see that historic pub, The Ship, behind Holborn station used for one of the scenes.

The bar, first established in the 16th century, is the setting for a clandestine leak to the press about the difficulties on the plane. For storyline purposes only, of course, the pub is briefly shut to customers for this exchange of information.

It made me think I hadn’t been in there for a while, and I will go again soon. It’s a pub with so much history the walls would have so many stories to tell if they could talk, albeit not as terrifying as the one told in Hijack.
