Harrington: Calm down, Spurs!
Tottenham fans don’t help themselves by describing their mild success as equating to being European champions
Friday, 23rd May

LONDON is witnessing one of history’s greatest con tricks – and the decision we all face is, do we play along with it because it makes the perpetrators happy or call out the lie?
There is no need to be mean about the Tottenham Hotspur supporters who have been celebrating winning the lowly Europa League this week, but they do not help themselves by describing this mild success as equating to being European champions.
The club’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, has acted like he has won all of football – rather than simply guiding his team through a less than challenging run of matches against such European non-giants as Qarabag, Elfsborg and Bodo Glimt. He has obviously trained himself to believe that he has won a major trophy because he says it’s a major trophy.
In truth, Tottenham have lost 21 matches this season and are still cranking out an open top bus for a parade today (Friday).
The chutzpah to act like world beaters is, admittedly impressive in its own right, but the Europa League cup of also rans is not something that merits such wild celebrations.
The Spurs social media admins are doing their best, but we will not become victims of this indoctrination.
The clue: the biggest prize of winning the Europa League is not having to play in the Europa League next season. So, Spurs are delighted not to be in a cup they are insisting is vitally important.
A city shakes its head, confused.
