START your St Patrick’s Day celebrations early with Slainte! Theatre’s Camden Market St Patrick’s Day Cabaret – a one-night-only event featuring Celtic comedy, spoken word, music and more at Dingwalls on March 15. Other timely Celtic events include traditional Dublin folk singer Damien Dempsey at Electric Ballroom (March 15); and, on St Paddy’s Day itself (March 17), Irish actor and singer-songwriter Niall McNamee at The Garage; The Celtic Social Club, The Lexington; Young Dublin band Scustin plus Last Apollo, Tarmac and DJs London Ghost, appropriately at The Dublin Castle.
• Cheeky TV chef and rapper Big Zuu and north London MC Capo Lee mark the release of their joint album Signed & Delivered with a live performance at Jazz Cafe on March 19 where they will be joined by special guests D7, SPYRO, Jayahadadream and Crafty.
• Take your pick from some strong female line-ups at three events to mark International Women’s Day: Cecil Sharp House holds its first ever Feminist Folk Club Festival – in collaboration with Thank Folk For Feminism – on March 8. The one-day event promises live music, storytelling, laughter and song, celebrating inspirational women’s voices in folk and featuring performances from six inspirational female folk musicians including Emily Portman, Daisy Beau, Lucy and Hazel, Jasmine Kennedy, Nancy Kerr and Sandra Kerr. Four female-fronted punk and post-punk London bands – Healthy Junkies, Delta Unit, Pollypikpocketz and She Made Me Do It – have joined strengths to celebrate IWD at The Water Rats on March 8. And, if you want to continue enjoying some top quality female talent, head to Green Note on March 9 where Michele Stodart (of The Magic Numbers) and the venue’s Immy Doman have collaborated to create a one-off intimate all-star lineup.
• Rising West Midlands songwriter and guitarist Nieve Ella heads to Koko on March 12 in celebration of new EP Watch It Ache and Bleed and her biggest headline show to date.
• Musical Theatre nerds assemble – practice your scales and run through your West End repertoire – Broadway Rave is coming to The Camden Assembly on March 7, a dance party celebrating the best in show tunes and musical theatre, be ready to sing along to the best Broadway hits and come dressed up in character.
• Camden-born Mercury Prize-nominated Jazz musician Nubya Garcia celebrates the release of her third album Odyssey at Koko on March 13.
• Gospel and blues singer-songwriter Izo FitzRoy brings her live band and gospel choir to Islington Assembly Hall on March 7.
• Five-time Grammy winner Lalah Hathaway plays Jazz Cafe on March 16.
