Nick Cave is at Kings Place [Megan Cullen]
AFTER it was rained off earlier in the summer, Dig It Sound System’s Parliament Hill Fields party is back tomorrow (Friday), bringing good times and big beats to Hampstead Heath. Running from 5pm-ish, the annual knees-up draws young and old to get lost in the music at the Parlie Hill bandstand. Bring a picnic but don’t get too settled as the enticement to dance is irresistible. And, once the Heath police turn up to gently remind the crowd of the curfew, roll on up to the Dartmouth Arms for the after-party!
• London’s festivals continue this week with All Points East at Victoria Park saving some top headliners for the Bank Holiday weekend. LCD Soundsystem take the lead tomorrow (Friday), sharing the bill with Jai Paul, Pixies, Floating Points, The Kills and more. Then, Field Day takes over on Saturday with Justice, Charlotte De Witte Presents Overdrive, 2ManyDJs, Afrodeutsche, Abdelwahed and plenty of other acts. The festival closes on Sunday with The Postal Service & Death Cab For Cutie, The Decemberists, Phoenix, Gossip, Lany, Say She She, Sleater-Kinney and, you’ve guessed it, many more!
• Over in N1, King’s Cross Summer Series, the area’s annual free 10-day music festival, concludes on Bank Holiday Monday – so there are still performances from artist and migrant refugee group The Green Room Collective (Aug 23); artists from the English National Opera (Aug 24); Jazz and Youth Culture Family Sunday, a day of music and performance encouraging families to get involved with the arts through jazz, dance and arts and craft presented by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra plus music from YolanDa Brown (Aug 25), while the Bank Holiday Monday is Folk Festival Day with music from QWERIN, Kabantu and Kinnaris Quintet (Aug 26).
• Hear Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ new album Wild God in full on the eve of its release and put your questions directly to Cave at a special Q&A at Kings Place on Aug 29.
• Brighton rock outfit The Wytches play a sold out set at The Underworld tomorrow (Aug 23) where they will perform debut album, 2014’s Annabel Dream Reader in full. Stick around for the after party from 11pm.
• We first spotted Rizzle Kicks at The Enterprise during the Camden Crawl in 2011 when the crowds, immersed in the duo’s bouncy energy, caused the floor to vibrate to such a degree that we feared a repeat of Los Campesinos!’ set the previous year when the set had to be concluded with the audience sitting on the floor. Thirteen years on and, after a nine-year break, a lot has happened. The band announced they were back recording together earlier this year and the duo have been up to plenty in the meantime. Find out what has been occupying Jordan Stephens when he speaks to Munya Chawawa at Union Chapel On Fame, Love and Modern Masculinity on Aug 28 where he will discuss his new memoir Avoidance, Drugs, Heartbreak & Dogs reflecting on his own life experiences and encouraging a healthier concept of masculinity.
• Black Country New Road play a one-off work in progress show in the intimate surrounds of The Lexington on Sept 3 to mark their 20th anniversary – lucky ticket-holders will get to hear the band exclusively play new unreleased material.
• Fontaines DC play a last-minute set tonight (Thursday) at Electric Ballroom ahead of the release of new album ROMANCE on Friday.
• Indie pop band The Magnetic Fields perform their landmark triple album 69 Love Songs at Barbican (Aug 31-Sept 1), to mark the 25th anniversary of the album. The band will perform 69 Love Songs in its entirety over the course of two nights. Originally conceived as a cabaret song cycle for the stage, lead singer/songwriter Stephin Merritt wrote 69 Love Songs using a variety of popular music styles, from punk to country to soul and jazz, creating a cult classic.
