Sadiq Khan

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan

• IT is extremely unlikely the Green Party will come to Sadiq Khan’s rescue over ULEZ because most people who seriously support the Green agenda will be aware of how much ecological (and air quality) damage ULEZ is doing, (Will the Greens come to Sadiq Khan’s rescue? September 7).

It is likely that those people can see beyond the ends of their collective noses. Demolishing millions of cars and building millions more to replace them will produce far more pollution than the vehicles would pollute in the rest of their useful lives if they were not banned.

The green legislation could have been beneficially phased in by putting bans on the registration of new vehicles that do not comply with clean air needs. That would have gradually improved air quality instead of making it worse.

Scrapping and replacing does not only involve the pollution from demolition and building but the pollution from the multitude of other activities (like mining, office work, transport, smelting, plastic processing, travel…) that ensue as a result.
