Great tributes to two men who made their dreams come true

Sid Hayes

Sid Hayes, right, and Vic Akers, who were key figures in the development of Arsenal women’s team

• I WRITE in reference to the obituaries of both Sid Hayes and Jonathan Privett (Sid, our champ on the sidelines and Born bookseller Jon fulfilled his dream on canal).

What great tributes to two men who made their dreams come true.

Like many others, I have become as deeply invested in women’s football now as I ever was in the men’s game, having over the years grown quite disillusioned with it and the near riots masquerading as celebrations after some of their games.

By contrast the atmosphere in Trafalgar Square last year following England Lionesses’ Euro win was a joy.

Thanks, Sid, for your great part in that through the years.

I was sad, too, to see Jonathan go. I passed his book barge whenever I could, browsing the stalls, but rarely venturing on, being such a landlubber that any wobble was enough to set me off. And telling him to his pleasant amusement that I “preferred my bookshops not to move”.

His presence will be missed and his greatest achievement must be that with all the redevelopment that has gone on around there in the last decades, his floating book barge is still its greatest highlight.

RIP to you both. You lived your dreams.
