It’s vital that voters be allowed to have their say

• DAVID Cheeseman is upset by Labour’s decision to campaign for a second referendum, which he says would nullify the democratic result of the 2016 one, (Don’t deny the democratic will of the people, July 5). Voters can and do change their minds, one reason why we have elections every five years.

If the leave decision of 2016 was reversed in another referendum – hopefully untainted by the irregularities that characterised the earlier one – it would be clear to everyone that the country had decided that enough was enough and had realised that Brexit was not going to be either simple and straightforward or the liberating change we were led to believe it would be.

Now, as a populist-driven Tory prime minister threatens to tear our country from the European Union regardless of the consequences, it’s vital that voters be allowed to have their say.

Caroline Flint and other MPs in leave constituencies should be helping their constituents come to terms with the reality of Brexit, especially given the likely no-deal outcome. Failure to do so could put her and others in a difficult situation once the effects of a chaotic exit begin to make themselves felt.
