• GOOD for the youth MPs campaigning for free school meals for all pupils, (We’re taking fight for free school meals to Commons, October 26).
When they get to the House of Commons our young MPs will find that their senior counterpart MPs there and their staff (around 3,000 people in all) enjoy subsidised meals to the tune of £5.7million a year (that’s an average over three years).
Given that the Commons sits just 200 days a year, that’s a daily subsidy of £9.50 each. School dinners are reckoned to cost £2.40 each – a snip by comparison!
I’m ready to have my maths corrected by the Great Mathematician Rishi Sunak. But I bet taxpayers would consider pupils to be the more deserving of the government’s largesse on their behalf.
