Depopulate central London at your peril
Friday, 26th August 2022
• AS a Soho resident of long-standing, I was utterly appalled by comments from the managers of the bars that want to remain open all hours, (Pleas for bars to stay open in ‘24-hour city’, August 19).
I have written about this before and reiterate, in the strongest terms, my objection to this. This “…but you live in Soho, so what do you expect?” type of attitude, is based on complete ignorance of the nature of the neighbourhood.
We are tired of those more interested in their own enrichment than anybody else’s quality of life, trying to tell us about where we live.
Soho is unique precisely because of its mix of businesses and residents. People have always lived here and several of my neighbours’ families have lived here for generations; were born here, went to school here, as do their grandchildren.
Since “al fiasco” levels of noise and anti-social behaviour have become almost unbearable for many.
Some long-term residents have been driven out, and they take with them yet more of Soho’s cultural history. Depopulate central London at your peril. You’ll kill it.
