Democracy and rational argument have long since flown out of the window

• SO MP Mark Field, “believes that there is no way out of the Brexit impasse without a second referendum”, (MP Field slams PM’s ‘ugly flashpoint’ in parliament, October 11). He is wrong.
Another referendum will get us nowhere because the losers (whoever they are) will simply avail themselves of the precedent set by the losers of the last referendum and refuse to accept the result.
Democracy and rational argument have long since flown out of the window on Brexit anyway.
The situation we find ourselves in is more akin to being tangled up in the guy ropes of a hot-air balloon that has broken its moorings. As it drifts higher should we untangle ourselves as quickly as possible or cling on?
A decision was made to untangle ourselves but those too frightened to let go started a delaying argument about how to untangle ourselves, desperately hoping to postpone the inevitable for long enough not to have to do it at all.
The Brexit impasse will only end when we have done what we said we would do because those who won the referendum will not accept it being turned over before it has been enacted.
After we have left, those wishing for the UK to be a member of the EU will be free to campaign to rejoin.
