‘Average motor traffic speeds in inner London were way below 20mph and so are hardly affected by speed limit reduction from 30mph’
• I AM sorry that J Jordan doesn’t see the advantages of 20mph speeds when there are so many in populated areas such as Camden, Westminster and Islington boroughs, (There are dangers with the 20mph limit, May 25).
Apart from the obvious that at 30mph you kill 10 times as many of pedestrian traffic, it takes about twice as far to stop and avoid any collisions.
Then there is the road noise which rises above the World Health Organisation-recommended maximum outside dwellings, linked to wear and tear on tyres spreading rubber particles for both the drivers, their passengers, and all others nearby to inhale.
Average motor traffic speeds in inner London were way below 20mph and so are hardly affected by speed limit reduction from 30mph.
As an occasional motorist I find that it is widely observed and only once have I been overtaken observing it myself. And we don’t legitimise car theft because some are still stolen.
