John Sadler cartoon - construction noise

• CONSTRUCTION noise laws must be changed and soon. It is no longer acceptable for residents to suffer 55 hours a week unlimited construction noise. People suffering HS2 noise, dirt and disruption will agree, I am sure.

Recently more people living in otherwise quiet residential streets throughout Camden are being subjected to “torture” levels of construction noise. There is no recourse because between 8am and 6pm any amount of noise seems to be allowable, due to construction.

These laws were implemented around working (men’s) lives, presuming everyone leaves the house around 8am and comes home around 6pm. As we all know society is not like this any more. Current laws do not take into account the wide variety of households now.

With seniors, physically and/or psychiatrically disabled people, night-time and shift workers, people off work short-term, sick and needing peace to recover. Also carers of the young and senior members, those who are being cared for, all need peace during much of their days for healthy living.

My suggestions are:

• No work weekends and Wednesdays. At least this way we get a break in the week and all weekend to have some rest.

• No work after 4.30pm. I certainly have had more than enough by then. Many construction workers stop by 4.30pm already, however the workers in my area are working right up to the 6pm deadline and considerably over the 1pm Saturday deadline every weekend.

Ten hours a day of constant work, from 8am to 6pm, they don’t stop for lunch, is simply too much noise/stress/ disruption. If nothing else this is unsupportable for the workers who must be over tired, working 55 hours a week. Can they really be working safely?
