Councillors’ silence lets down their party and the labour movement

Thursday, 24th December 2020

• THE failure of any Labour councillors to speak out against the suspension of their local party officers or challenge the censorship of discussion and ideas by the national leadership is frankly appalling.

Many of these councillors were elected as socialists with the active support of those members who have now been suspended. Their silence shames them, just as it shames the labour movement.

If they won’t stand in solidarity with members who dared to challenge the undemocratic behaviour of the Sir Keir Starmer leadership you have to question their place in the movement.

What do they actually represent? Maybe I missed it, and they have written collectively to the party hierarchy and called on all like-minded socialists to do the same; but as far as I’m aware they’ve remained embarrassingly invisible.

Hello? Is there anybody out there?
