Coram’s Fields [Clem Rutter]
• I AM the mum of a 13-year old boy and live close to Coram’s Fields playground, in between Holborn and Russell Square.
This is the only open space suitable for children that we have in this area. Since the age of two my son has always wanted to run or to play football and he would spend time with other kids at the football pitches.
It was a safe environment which offered freedom, space and time for them to grow and express themselves. But things have changed.
We visit the park very often, but he is often unable to play. Large groups of adults are allowed to rent in the afternoons, after school, and on entire weekends.
The presence of adults has increased to such an extent that young boys and girls can barely play, if at all. And this is meant to be a children-only playground.
My son and I are grateful to those in the 1930s that created this playground for future generations of children. My child today is meant to be that new generation.
Yet Coram’s Fields is being taken away from him and I do not know how or why this was allowed to happen. This betrayal of our children must stop
