Comics are being censored today

• I SYMPATHISE with Antony Porter’s bemoaning at the junior school-level of comedy on Radio 4, (What’s so funny about ‘toilet humour’?, February 8).

The reason for this might well be due to the fact that a comic today is restricted in the areas he or she may joke about. Jack Dee recently said that when a comedian arrives at a venue now, they are handed a list of off-limit subjects. Others have echoed his concern.

The University of Southampton has, according to one well-known comedian, 20 items on its banned list. Telling silly toilet jokes can easily be done without offending any “sensitive” groups.

I am sure the BBC also imposes some comedic censorship. Many people who read the CNJ work in broadcasting and it would be good to hear their views.
