Language of the Beeb’s playground

• THIS autumn the BBC will be celebrating its centenary.

Founded in November 1922 its mission has been “to enrich people’s lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain”.

But what is now needed is a committee whose purpose is to investigate vulgarisms on BBC Radio 4 and to make recommendations regarding them.

Many so-called comedies containing swearing, bad language, and toilet humour, are served up at evening meal times or when children are around. These would be better broadcast late at night.

It feels strange to turn on the radio at prime times and then hear men and women using “the language of the playground”. Yet complaining about this currently leads us listeners nowhere.
