• THE London-wide clean air zone will save lives, it is as simple as that.

I’m glad the courts have backed the vital ULEZ scheme, cleaning up London’s air is not a political crusade but respect for a basic human right, the right to clean air.

Everyone involved in the case said they wanted clean air, and now that the ULEZ has been confirmed as legal it is time for everyone to focus on how we support a successful implementation.

The government should be providing support for people, outside of London, who need to change cars so that the impact of the ULEZ is maximised and pollution is reduced – as a previous legal judgment requires – in the shortest possible time.

If the government still won’t support scrappage, then the mayor should consider how he can work with supportive boroughs to provide scrappage outside.

We must always remember that when it comes to the ULEZ we are discussing a measure that is going to save lives and avoid stunting the lungs of our children.
