Can you help with a family tree?

Thursday, 20th June 2019

• MY name is Linda Corriveau and I am researching my grandmother’s family tree.

My grandmother Bertha Elizabeth Bates was born in the Marleybone district of London. Her parents were Margaret A Bates (née Robert) and Thomas Henry Bates who was born in Kentish Town.

He apparently was a cook on the steamer Jersey that sailed out of Bristol. He also spent some time in jail due to the abandonment of his family.

My grandmother and her sister Lucy were sent to Canada through the British Home Child programme. Margaret Bates may have returned to Guernsey.

My grandmother did not talk about her time in England and her time spent possibly in a workhouse or cottage home.

I haven’t been able to find a death record for Margaret so I am hoping that this may sound familiar or similar to someone’s family lineage.
