HERE we go again!
The Premier League is back, and for now at least, anything and everything is possible.
Arsenal have spent almost £200m in their bid to take one very large step in the table and go from perennial runners-up to champions.
The problem is they are not the only ones who have invested wisely in improving their squad.
The Gunners kick off their campaign at Old Trafford on Sunday when they go up against a Manchester United side boasting a brand-new attack. And while in the past this has often been a fixture won in midfield, this time all the talk is about the forwards.
Arsenal were said to be long-time admirers of Benjamin Sesko, but eventually turned to Viktor Gyokeres to solve their striker crisis.
It was a decision that divided fans – well, apart from those optimistic Gooners who desperately wanted both.
Of course, football is a drama that loves a plot twist. Sesko instead ended up at United, and he would love to show the Gunners what they missed out on this weekend. Meanwhile, Gyokeres will be hoping to haunt his former Sporting manager Ruben Amorim by condemning the Red Devils to an opening day defeat.
Having seen Gyokeres open his Arsenal account in the 3-0 Emirates Cup win over Athletic Club, Mikel Arteta seems in little doubt that he’s found the right man for the job.
Reflecting on his new number 14’s desire to score, the Gunners boss said: “That’s his nature, I think everything that he does – his movement, the way he times his runs, the way he predicts the next move and where the space can be and where the ball is going to land – that’s the instinct that he has. That’s why he’s scored so many goals in the last few seasons – that’s not a coincidence, it’s his ability and he’s constantly looking for it.”
Albeit belatedly, Arteta will name a line-up with a proven net-buster for the first time in three years. And the magnitude of what Gyokeres will add to the team isn’t lost on the Spaniard.
“Well, I think his goals, his threat,” added Arteta. “I think that he pins both centre-backs. He’s a player that when you’re living with a space, one against one, he’s going to destroy you.
“He’s going to create a lot of space as well for us, and the moment – that in any situation there is a player there that can score a goal.”
After adding Gyokeres, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard and Cristhian Mosquera to his squad, you’d be forgiven for thinking Arsenal’s summer spending is done. But Arteta made it clear the chequebook hasn’t been put away just yet.
He said: “Let’s see what happens in terms of where the squad is in the next few weeks, but we are actively looking at options. There are a few players maybe that they have to leave as well, so we’ll be open to see what happens.”
The key element is getting players off the books, but the Gunners are seemingly struggling to offload those Arteta deems surplus to requirements, including Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Karl Hein, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Reiss Nelson.
North London rivals Tottenham will be hoping that they can start the Thomas Frank era by beating Burnley at home in their league opener.
But their biggest win – certainly when it comes to irking Gooners – could come off the pitch as they look to take advantage of Arsenal’s inability to sell by swooping in to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze.
It’s thought that the FA Cup winner will cost in the region of £65m, although Frank remained coy when asked about Spurs interest in the 27-year-old.
He said: “I think there are a lot of good players out there. In general, players in or players out, I always speak about something that is done or not done.”
Tottenham are desperate to add to their midfield options after James Maddison was ruled out for the majority of the forthcoming season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
